Bird banding demo
Members of the Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance will be meeting in Milpitas on May 31 for a bird banding demonstration with the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory.
Alliance members will visit the Coyote Creek Field Station for the demonstration, where they’ll get a birds-eye view of each step in the banding process, from capture to release, while learning about the research done at the field station.
The Cupertino-based Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance was founded as the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society in 1925 to promote/ the enjoyment, understanding and protection of birds and other wildlife by engaging people of all ages in birding, education and conservation. The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory was founded in the 1970s, when a collection of bird enthusiasts, including San Jose State University Profs. Richard Mewaldt and Michael Rigney, began studying the birds that lived on and around the commercial salt ponds of the South Bay. With other local residents from a birding class, they started a project to investigate the seasonal use of the ponds by roosting and nesting waterbirds under the auspices of the South Bay Institute for Avian Studies, now called the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory. Some Milpitas teens are hosting a hands-on conservation event for their peers at the Milpitas Library on May 30, 2-3:15 p.m., when participants ages 12-18 can learn about the importance of protecting habitats, especially for pollinators like monarch butterflies.
Following a presentation, participants will paint and decorate their own ceramic clay pots, plant seeds and take home their creations as a way to support local ecosystems. They’ll also be able to play a game where they can win prizes.
