Nestled in the Humanities Quad on Tuesday afternoon, TitanHealth, Associated Students and other on-campus health organizations gathered to play roles in Adult Recess. The event focused on student well-being and featured tables offering various workout communities, free flu shots and additional resources.
Lynnette De Los Angeles, a health educator at TitanHealth, explained that the title “Adult Recess” stems from the notion that many people have not felt the same joy in moving their bodies since elementary school recess.
“Physical activity doesn’t have to be this rigorous thing that you’re doing at 5 a.m., it can be the activities you do just for fun,” De Los Angeles said.
Students were first encouraged to check in with the TitanHealth tent, where they received empty stamp cards serving as their entry into the raffle giveaway. Each of the booths that lined the quad would offer information and, in return, give a sticker to fill the stamp card.
After filling the stamp card with all twelve stickers, it would be returned to the Health Tent along with the student’s name, email and campus-wide ID. The prizes included a cookware gift basket and some Columbia Sportswear gear provided by Titan Outdoor Education, with the winner to be chosen sometime this week.
Jennifer Langenwalter, a health educator at TitanWELL and one of the head coordinators of the event, shared that their goal was to show students the importance of “Moving for play, moving for fun, moving for joy.”
The event displayed different joyful ways to move one’s body, including walking around the Fullerton Arboretum and joining the Titan Outdoors club, which provides gear and a community for hiking trips.
Langenwalter’s booths for TitanWELL provided a hydration station, offering a homemade electrolyte drink made from watermelon, honey, Himalayan salt and limes, which gave students a healthy drink to sip on while wandering the booths.
For many, getting the movement they need might not be as simple as it sounds, with various barriers holding people back. Langenwalter’s table also offered donated lightly used workout gear to anyone who stopped by, ensuring that everyone can “embrace joyfully moving their bodies.”
The Counseling and Psychological Services tent offered resources for mental well-being, ranging from psychiatric services to dog therapy sessions. TitanMED provides assistance in a physical sense, from the free flu shots offered at the event to physical rehabilitation services.
The event also hosted a tent for The Pantry, which provides free groceries to all enrolled Cal State Fullerton students.
Isabella Hagopian, a third-year biology major, stumbled upon this event while walking to class. She shared that her favorite tent was the mobility and stretching tent, where an instructor taught seated stretching moves, which she said helped her relax.
One of the many booths set up was the student organization Girl Gains, an all-female weightlifting club open to CSUF students that meets twice a week from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center.
“We’re here to empower women and have them be confident in who they are,” said Mattea Chung, a senior business marketing major who worked the organization’s booth.
On one hand, having the event towards the end of October guarantees sunshine, but the timing also aligns with many students’ midterm exams. Langenwalter expressed the importance of moving the body in any way one can and the importance of “taking those five-minute brain breaks, no matter what they be, and playing and having fun.”
