SANTA CLARA — Intel broke ground on what it describes as an expansion of its mask operations center in Santa Clara, an essential first step in the chip manufacturing process.
The new campus consists of two buildings that total 107,000 square feet, according to Santa Clara city planning files.
“Santa Clara has been home to some of Intel’s most important manufacturing innovations for decades,” said Frank Abboud, a vice president of the Intel Foundry unit and general manager of Intel’s mask operations. “We’re strengthening a critical capability that supports advanced process technology production around the world and reinforces Intel Foundry’s commitment to advancing U.S. semiconductor manufacturing leadership.”
The production hub will be on a section of a 26-acre campus at the corner of Bowers Avenue and Central Expressway, according to Intel.
Intel Mask Operations has been part of the Bowers campus since 1986, Intel said. The site is part of Intel’s broader mask operations footprint that helps enable production across Intel Foundry’s global manufacturing network, the chipmaker said.
“The expansion reinforces Intel’s long-standing presence in Santa Clara, its commitment to U.S. semiconductor leadership and the importance of advanced manufacturing capabilities in the California innovation ecosystem,” Intel stated.
The new facility is emerging at a time when semiconductor, computer, electronics, and peripheral equipment manufacturing jobs are growing in the South Bay, the state Employment Development Department reported in May.
Over the one-year period that ended in May, the South Bay added 900 computer and electronics production jobs, a category that includes semiconductor positions, which is also growing, according to the EDD.
