The South Bay’s successful Sushi Confidential group is giving up its restaurant site at San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose to focus on growth elsewhere in the Bay Area, founder-owner Randy Musterer announced Monday evening.
“This is a transition out of San Pedro Square, not a departure from San Jose,” Musterer wrote in a press release. “Our Willow Glen restaurant continues to thrive, our catering business across Silicon Valley is stronger than ever, and Sharks fans can still enjoy their favorite Sushi Confidential rolls right inside SAP Center.”
All other locations, including Campbell and Morgan Hill, will remain open.
The news comes just a week after the monthlong World Cup soccer parties generated the most business the restaurants in the city’s major FIFA entertainment zone had ever seen. “I’d say, in terms of sales, it was more than six Super Bowls,” Musterer told this news organization in a story published July 19.
However, in an email later Monday, Musterer said the decision predates both the World Cup parties and the popular Super Bowl activities hosted by the city of San Jose and San Pedro Square earlier in 2026.
“This has been in the works for over a year,” he said. “The timing with the ABC license being approved and posted just happened due to some paperwork delays over the past three months. ABC is very overwhelmed right now so the transfer is taking a lot of time.”
The San Pedro restaurant will close Aug. 30, and another hospitality group will take over that location. The decision was a strategic one, he said, intended to take advantage of Sushi Confidential’s “highly scalable model” and “rapidly expanding corporate catering division.” He envisions opening five new restaurants in the next five years.
He said the San Pedro restaurant will host celebrations during the month of August to thank employees, guests and the downtown community.
“We wanted to give our employees as much advance notice and support as possible,” Musterer also said in the release. “Many of them have been with us for years, and they deserve tremendous credit for the success of this restaurant. Our priority is to help as many team members as possible transition into opportunities within our other Sushi Confidential locations.
“We’re also encouraged that the new hospitality group has expressed a strong interest in retaining many of our current employees, which should help create a smoother transition for both our team and our loyal guests.”
