SAN JOSE — Construction is starting for a housing project just east of downtown San Jose that will include affordable residences for seniors.
Trillium Senior Apartments, at 700 East Santa Clara St., is expected to have 68 units, with 67 set aside as affordable homes, documents filed in May with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office. One unit would be a manager’s residence.
Eden Housing is the principal developer of the project, which is being built on land owned by Santa Clara County.
The affordable apartments will be available to households earning up to 60% of the area median income. Twenty units will be reserved as permanent supportive housing for seniors exiting homelessness.
As of May, the Santa Clara County area median income was $143,850 for a one-person household and $205,500 for a household of four, according to the state Housing and Community Development Department.
A 60% income threshold would equate to $86,310 for one person and $123,300 for a household of four.
Trillium Senior Apartments is part of a 661-unit project that the Santa Clara County Housing Authority envisions for a site just east of downtown where a hospital once operated.
The larger overall mixed-use development would be bounded by East Santa Clara Street, North 14th Street, East St. John Street, and North 15th Street.
“The development is part of the East Santa Clara Master Plan, a joint initiative led by the County of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara County Housing Authority to create a mixed-use, mixed-income community featuring diverse housing options, flexible office space, retail, and open space,” county officials stated.
