Downtown’s temple to quality beef, Superprime Steakhouse (opens in new tab), closed Friday. Chef and owner Marc Zimmerman said he made the decision after the landlord doubled the rent and planned another increase for January.

“It was just one of these things where we went round and round with these guys trying to get somewhere and went nowhere,” Zimmerman said, adding that the restaurant brought in several millions in the year it was open and seemed to be viable.

Superprime, which opened in July 2025, was a return to Zimmerman’s steakhouse roots. He came to San Francisco in 2010 as a part of Alexander’s Steakhouse and eventually became the group’s business development manager. Breaking out on his own in 2017, he opened the wagyu tasting menu restaurant Gozu near the Embarcadero, which he flipped after six years into The Wild. That fine-dining restaurant, which earned him a Michelin nod, closed in December.
