Power corrupted
Opera San José’s 43rd season opens in September with a reimagined production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” a dark psychological thriller about a wealthy aristocrat spiraling out of control. Opera San José’s production examines the supernatural justice that awaits the title character, who finally pushes too far.
Internationally renowned tenor Alek Shrader, who directed last season’s “Così Fan Tutte,” helms this production, with Opera San Jose Music Director and Principal Conductor Joseph Marcheso leading the orchestra.
“Don Giovanni” runs Sept. 13-27 at the California Theatre, 345 S. First St. Tickets are $58-$215, plus a $3.50 fee per ticket at operasj.org or 408-437-4450.
Latinx Pride
The Queer Silicon Valley Gallery is opening its newest exhibit, “Traditions Without Borders (Tradición Sin Fronteras)” on the Friday before Pride Weekend. The exhibit explores the history of Folclórico Colibrí, a San Jose-based organization that promotes the pride in identifying as LGBTQ+ Latinx through Mexican folklórico dance.
An opening reception is set for Friday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m. at the Queer Silicon Valley Gallery, 240 S Market St., suite 10. Refreshments will be served.
