The San Jose man who died in a boat collision last week was a software engineer at Apple and a father of three children, according to an online fundraiser created on behalf of his family.
Daniel Zhengyu Qin, 35, died on Thursday after the fishing vessel he was riding on ran aground north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The collision injured two other boaters.
Qin was a “devoted husband” and had three young children aged 11, 9 and three, according to the GoFundMe page, which was created by Cathy Wu, a friend of the family, for Qin’s wife Yao Deng. Deng could be reached directly for comment Monday afternoon,
“His sudden passing has left his wife and children facing an unimaginable loss, both emotionally and financially,” the page reads.
The fundraiser describes Qin as “kind, funny, and endlessly generous.”
“He got along effortlessly with his coworkers, his children looked up to him, and his friends adored him,” the page reads. “He was always the first to show up when anyone needed help — whether it was passing along his kids’ outgrown things to other families, sharing the fish he caught on his fishing trips, or simply lending a hand whenever a friend was in need. He leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity that will live on through his three children.”
Around 6 a.m. on Thursday, authorities responded to Lime Point on reports that a 22-foot boat was stuck and taking on water. A Coast Guard ship responded to retrieve the boaters, one of whom was in cardiac arrest when they arrived. The man in cardiac arrest was revived en route to the hospital but later died due to significant trauma.
The fundraiser is seeking to raise $200,000 to cover memorial expenses, emergency costs and the living costs of his children. By Monday afternoon, it had raised more than $80,000.
