For my friend Susan’s birthday party at the newly opened Cellar 13 tasting room in Livermore, we decided to order pizzas from Tony Gemignani’s new Slice House in Livermore. The first thing I noticed about the menu is that it’s complicated. Do you want Detroit, Grandma’s, New York or Sicilian style? Each crust is different, and then you have to select from the pies available in each category. It makes ordering from a Chinese menu look easy.

We ended up getting eight different pies, aiming for diversity, but when my friend Bob picked up the order (thank you, Bob), none of the boxes were labeled. Let’s just say it was like an SAT test trying to match the pies in front of us with the pies on our tiny phones in a dimly lit space. But we managed and overall, I liked the crunchy crispiness of the Grandma’s square pies, as well as the softer style of the round New York style. Highly recommended is the Grandma’s GMA Cal Ital with prosciutto, asiago, gorgonzola, mozzarella, fig preserve, Parmigiano-Reggiano and balsamic.

You, too, can experience the thrill of triangulating an order when Slice House comes to San Jose later this fall.

To round out the pie party, I ordered a sensational raspberry vanilla custard cream tart from Fleur de Cocoa in Los Gatos, which was outstanding in presentation and flavor. Susan especially enjoyed eating the little square of chocolate that contained “happy birthday” wishes.

It’s still tomato season, thank goodness. Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley just held its annual Heirloom Tomato Brunch, which featured groaning tables of tomato-accented dishes. Their custom heirloom-based Bloody Mary blends from Tabitha Stroup of Terroir in a Jar are exquisite, their yeasty tomato bread divine and the caramelized heirloom tomato tarte tatin the talk of the town.

The tomatoes were sourced from Andy Griffin and Starr Linden of Mariquita Farms in Watsonville and Dick Swank of Swank Farms in Hollister. Among those on display were the rare Piennolas, a variety grown by Griffin and sold at pop-ups.

Bernardus will be featuring some of these special dishes and items, including the Bloody Mary mixes and other seasonal syrups from Friend in Cheeses, while supplies last. Get on their mailing list for other specialty brunches coming up, featuring fall produce, pumpkins, apples and hopefully, mushrooms.
