Drilling related to the Clearwater tunneling project will resume on a portion of Western Avenue in San Pedro on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Drilling will restart on Western near the Fifth Street cul-de-sac, requiring one southbound traffic lane closure.
It’s needed to investigate conditions beyond the damaged area of the tunnel.
Drilling and traffic control are expected to continue regularly for at least two months, but may be also affected by holidays and winter weather. Same-day decisions also may be made on whether drilling will occur.
But typical hours will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The project, which began in 2019, is intended to replace a tunnel system built in the 1930s and extend the ocean outfalls off the Palos Verdes Peninsula to meet 21st century standards and population needs. It runs underground from Carson to Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro, about 7 miles. Work has been halted for a little more than a year, however, after a July 2025 breach temporarily stranded workers some 320 feet below Western Avenue just north of Ninth Street.
