Dave Romney’s second-half goal and Earl Edwards Jr.’s nine saves propelled the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw on the road with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.
Romney scored in the 57th minute at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce, Colo. to extend San Jose’s MLS unbeaten streak to seven matches, keeping the Quakes in fourth place in the Western Conference.
The Quakes’ point earned gives them 46, moving them a point behind second-place St. Louis SC and FC Dallas with six regular season matches remaining for San Jose (13-8-7). First-place Vancouver (15-7-5) is just three points ahead of the Quakes.
San Jose appeared to open the scoring in the 13th minute when Ronaldo Vieira fed a through ball to Preston Judd in the left half-space and the forward pushed it past Colorado goalkeeper Nicolas Defreitas-Hansen. However, a VAR review showed Judd was offside, nullifying the score.
Colorado then took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Donovan Phillip jumped above the scrum and headed home a corner kick from Paxten Aaronson.
It stayed 1-0 until 12 minutes into the second half when San Jose’s Paul Marie was fouled outside the box in the right half-space. Timo Werner then delivered a free kick to the back post for Vieira, who headed it across goal for Romney. The defender placed a pinpoint volley through traffic into the back of the net for his second goal of the season to make it 1-1.
Both clubs came close to breaking the tie after that.
In the 82nd minute, Judd weaved around a pair of defenders and left-footed a shot that seemed net bound but Defreitas-Hansen made a kick save to prevent the goal.
The Rapids’ best chance came in the 86th minute when a Wayne Frederick header hit the post and was cleared off the line. Seconds later, Colorado continued the attack and Darren Yapi had a chance at point-blank range but Edwards extended to deny him for his ninth save of the match.
In stoppage time, San Jose was denied a potential goal for the second time in the match when Beau Leroux fed Ousseni Bouda in the box for what appeared to be the game-winner. However, Bouda was flagged for being offside.
“To come here and get a point, and even at the end of the game, having a possibility of winning the game was a really good effort by our team,” said Quakes coach Bruce Arena.
