San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl is firing back at City Council efforts to shut down the city’s license plate cameras.
Chief Wahl says the technology has helped solve more than 900 cases in three years—including hate crimes and an attempted child kidnapping.
His comments follow a press conference Tuesday where Council member Stephen Whitburn reversed his support for the system, citing immigration concerns.
But Wahl is drawing a hard line, stating the department has never shared camera data for immigration purposes, and is urging leaders to make safety decisions based on facts, not politics.
