LONG BEACH — After a hazing incident, the Wilson High School boys water polo team is canceling the rest of its season and withdrawing from the CIF Southern Section playoffs, according to the Long Beach Unified School District.

The hazing incident, in which varsity team members are accused of physically striking their teammates, took place Oct. 9 in a hotel room in San Jose, where the team was participating in the Memorial Cup tournament, according to an email sent by Wilson coach Zac Polmanteer.

“Wilson High School’s Boys Water Polo team will conclude its season following tonight’s game (Tuesday, Oct. 20) and will not participate in the CIF playoffs,” Long Beach Unified School District spokesperson Elvia Cano wrote in an email Tuesday afternoon. “Because the investigation is ongoing and the details involve confidential student and employee information, the District is limited in what it can share about the individuals involved and any specific actions taken at this time. This decision reinforces that Long Beach Unified does not tolerate hazing and reflects our commitment to student safety, well-being, and upholding expectations for respectful conduct.”

Polmanteer’s email to parents on Oct. 12 was titled “Statement on Hazing.”

“During this gathering, multiple student-athletes were subjected to humiliating and physically harmful acts,” Polmanteer wrote. “Some athletes sustained injuries from being physically struck by their teammates.”

“Out of respect for the students and families involved, I will not disclose further details,” Polmanteer continued. “This level of behavior is shocking, unacceptable, and completely contrary to everything we stand for as a program.”

Wilson (17-9, 5-0) has had four matches since the allegations came to light. They played and won league games against Long Beach Poly on Oct. 13 and Lakewood on Tuesday.

The Bruins forfeited nonleague road games against Loyola on Oct. 14 and Mira Costa on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

The Bruins will finish the season with a 17-10 overall record, including winning the Moore League title.

Wilson was likely headed for the Open Division playoffs of the CIF-SS playoffs as one of the teams ranked in the top eight in the section.

The CIF-SS boys water polo playoff brackets are scheduled to be released Friday at 2 p.m.
