SAN JOSE — Super Micro Computer has launched construction of a vast tech campus next to a former Fry’s Electronics store in San Jose, a project that could eventually produce a development totaling millions of square feet.

The tech company’s project is slated to sprout at 550 East Brokaw Road in north San Jose, a property where Fry’s once operated a consumer electronics store with a distinctive Mayan theme.

In 2024, Super Micro Computer paid $80 million for the Fry’s Electronics site, which has a prime location near the interchange of Interstate 880 and Brokaw Road.

Super Micro, which has been expanding in San Jose, won final city approval in May 2025 to develop the first building in what is expected to be a campus totaling 3 million square feet.

The initial building is expected to total 333,400 square feet, city planning records show.

All of the plans Super Micro Computer filed with city planners indicate that the shuttered Mayan-themed Fry’s store won’t be bulldozed.

City planning documents specified some uses for the first building.

“The building will receive shipments of computer components such as motherboards, hard drives, memory cards, cases, and metal racks, where they will be stored for assembly on site,” according to documents on file with city planners.

The 19.7-acre site formerly accommodated a Fry’s Electronics store, warehouse and the retailer’s headquarters. Founded in 1985 with a Sunnyvale location, Fry’s peaked in 2019 with 34 stores in 19 states.

In early 2021, Fry’s abruptly shut all of its stores and ceased operations, ending a storied chapter in American tech-oriented retail.

Super Micro Computer is in growth mode at a time when some tech companies have retrenched in the Bay Area, while others are seeking larger new office spaces.

In 2013, the tech company bought the former headquarters campus of the San Jose Mercury News, which is now located in downtown San Jose. In 2018, the tech company bulldozed the newspaper’s former newsroom building.

Super Micro Computer then embarked on a redevelopment of the one-time newspaper property, located on Ridder Park Drive near Brokaw Road. The redevelopment includes some new office and research buildings. The Ridder Park site is known as the company’s green computing campus.

Super Micro Computer’s development of the new building at the 550 East Brokaw site is expected to be a job-creating endeavor.

“Approximately 50 employees will be on-site at any given time,” a San Jose planning document states.
