SAN JOSE — A 17-year-old boy died after being shot Sunday in what police are investigating as the city’s first homicide of 2026, authorities said.

Shortly before 5 p.m., police responded to a shooting in a parking lot on the 1500 block of Winchester Boulevard, where they located the boy suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to a press release from the San Jose Police Department.

The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries, authorities said.

The incident is under investigation by SJPD’s Homicide Unit, authorities added. The circumstances around the incident and the motive for the shooting are not yet known.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.

This is San Jose’s first homicide of 2026. In 2025, authorities investigated the first homicide of the year on Jan. 11.

Both directions of South Winchester Boulevard were closed from Williamsburg Drive to Rosemary Lane Sunday evening.
