Nob Hill Foods, a longtime grocery store known for its higher-end offerings in Mountain View’s Cuesta Park neighborhood, is slated to close in May, its parent company confirmed.

The store at 1250 Grant Road, in the Grant Park Plaza shopping center, is owned by the Raley’s Companies, which acquired the Nob Hill Foods chain in 1998.

A company spokesperson said the decision followed a review of the store’s performance as its lease approached renewal.

“The Raley’s Companies leadership team has made the difficult decision to close our Nob Hill store on Grant Road in Mountain View,” spokesperson Chelsea Carbahal told the Mountain View Voice. “After careful review of the store’s performance and economic factors, we have chosen not to extend the lease.”

A WARN notice filed with the California Employment Development Department this week states the closure will be permanent and affect about 50 employees, effective May 29.

The store sits near El Camino Real and Grant Road, in an area with several other grocery options, including 99 Ranch Market, Smart & Final and Nijiya Market.

A Safeway is also located about a mile away at Cuesta Drive and Miramonte Avenue.

The site has previously drawn interest from city officials as a potential location for multifamily housing, according to the Mountain View Voice. Last year, the city discussed rezoning the Nob Hill property and nearby parcels, though no redevelopment plans have been submitted.

Carbahal said the company will work to place as many affected employees as possible at nearby Raley’s-owned stores. Other Nob Hill Foods locations remain open in Redwood City, Santa Clara, Campbell, Morgan Hill and San Jose.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for additional information.
