SAN JOSE — Ionna, an operator of electric vehicle charging and retail sites, bought a San Jose property on a busy street west of the city’s downtown, a deal that arrives on the heels of the company’s decision to expand in California.

The company paid $2.45 million for a vehicle sales site at the corner of West San Carlos Street and Buena Vista Avenue, documents filed on April 3 with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office show.

The property has addresses of 1555 and 1557 West San Carlos St., and 45 Buena Vista Ave., according to public real estate records.

Ionna provides electric vehicle charging stations that at times operate on the same site as a store and lounge area, an upgraded venue that gives drivers more than a place to juice up their cars.

Documents on file with San Jose planners didn’t specify the sort of EV charging complex that Ionna envisions at the West San Carlos site.

The company intends to invest more than $250 million to develop an electric vehicle charging network in California, Ionna stated in November 2025.

The company kicked off its California efforts with EV charging launch ceremonies in San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, and Westminster.

Ionna is also launching what it calls a Beacon flagship station at unspecified sites.

The Ionna Beacon stations feature 20 or more charging bays, a canopy covering all the stalls, trash bins, pet waste stations, outdoor seating areas, restrooms, an interior lounge space, and retail offerings. Outdoor activities and locally sourced artwork might also be offered.

Ionna began operations in 2024. Automakers BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellantis, and Toyota teamed up to form the joint venture that launched Ionna.
