Prescribed burn courses

The South Bay Prescribed Burn Association is offering five courses in firefighter training to Santa Clara County residents.

The association is led by the Saratoga-based Santa Clara County FireSafe Council and funded by the California State Coastal Conservancy. The five courses are available online for free and are prerequisites to obtaining a Firefighter Type II certificate, which is given to entry-level wildland firefighters who are responsible for fire suppression, fuels management and mop-up operations.

The classes are: Firefighter Training, Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior, Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service, Introduction to the Incident Command System and Introduction to NIMS. For more information and to enroll, visit https://sccfiresafe.org/sbpba.

ROSE GARDEN>>BASIS Independent Silicon Valley sixth-grader Ishani Dasgupta finished among the top four students in the Bay Area Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 29, qualifying her for the National Spelling Bee competition this May in Washington, D.C.

“I am really excited that I was able to qualify for the Nationals, it is such a prestigious tournament,” Ishani said in a release. “I will prepare hard and give it my best shot!”

Having competed in spelling bees for the past two years, Ishani says she plans to try to put in an hour of preparation every day and even more time on weekends in the build-up for the national competition.

WILLOW GLEN>>The Downtown Willow Glen Spring Wine Walk is set for April 18, 2-5 p.m., when businesses along Lincoln Avenue will be pouring 25 local wines.

Pet owners might want to leave their furry friends at homes, as pets are not allowed inside most businesses.
