A 63-year-old man died Sunday following a four-vehicle collision on Highway 87 in San Jose, authorities said Monday.

Offices and an ambulance were dispatched to northbound Highway 87 south of Interstate 280 at 3:15 p.m., where responders found that the collision involved major injuries, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.

A 2003 Nissan Frontier had been traveling northbound when it collided with the back of a 2021 Toyota Siena, causing the Toyota to collide with two other vehicles, authorities said. The two vehicles hit by the Toyota suffered moderate damage.

The drivers of both the Toyota and Nissan were taken to the hospital for their injuries; the Toyota driver later died, authorities said. The Nissan driver had minor injuries.

The man who died was identified as a 63-year-old resident of San Jose. His name will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office after it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

Authorities said they do not believe that alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.

The second and third lanes of Highway 87 were closed for two hours following the collision, authorities added.
