SAN JOSE — A 1-year-old child died Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle, authorities said.
Police were called to the 2100 block of Canoas Garden Avenue at 4:23 p.m., according to a news release from the San Jose Police Department.
Investigators found that a gray 2021 Toyota minivan driven by an adult man had been driving north on the driveway of an apartment complex, authorities said. The minivan struck a 1-year-old who had been walking through the parking lot.
The toddler was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where they were pronounced deceased, authorities added.
The victim was identified as Olivier Carmelo Sgarlata, a 1-year-old resident of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office.
Police did not provide further details on how Sgarlata was hit.
The minivan driver was cooperative with authorities and remained at the scene, police said. Investigators do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role.
The collision was the 16th traffic-related death, 16th fatal collision and seventh pedestrian death of the year.
