An 18-year-old Bay Area woman died last week after a rollover crash on a rural highway in eastern Nevada, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Troopers responded to a report of a crash at about 9:50 a.m. on April 24 on State Route 487 near mile marker 7 in White Pine County, authorities said. The location is roughly a half-mile north of Baker and about seven miles west of the Utah border.
A preliminary investigation found that a burgundy Ford Expedition was traveling northbound when it veered off the right side of the roadway, the highway patrol said. The driver then steered left, crossing the center line, before overcorrecting to the right. The vehicle left the roadway again and overturned.
The passenger, identified by authorities as Katherine Truong, 18, of San Jose, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The driver’s identity and condition have not been released. Officials have not said whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
White Pine County, where the crash occurred, is a sparsely populated, mountainous region along Nevada’s eastern border, with a population of about 9,000, according to U.S. Census data.
