SAN JOSE — Bay FC couldn’t take advantage of a first-half red card issued to Boston Legacy FC, settling for a 1-1 tie Friday night at PayPal Park.
Midfielder Dorian Bailey gave Bay FC (3-3-2, 11 points) the lead in the 51st minute, but Amanda Gutirres broke Bay’s club-record 289-minute shutout streak with a penalty kick in the 64th minute to earn a point for Boston (2-5-3, 9 points).
Bianca St-Georges received a straight red card in the 42nd minute for a dangerous tackle on Claire Hutton – the second red card of the season for the Canadian defender.
It didn’t take long for Bay FC to take advantage. Six minutes after halftime, Bailey dribbled past a defender and cut the ball into the opposite corner of the goal.
It was only the fourth goal in 128 league games for the University of North Carolina product, who has been with Bay FC since the team’s inception.
Bay FC seemed to have the game in hand, but a Jordan Silkowitz mistake allowed Boston to equalize in the 64th minute. The goalkeeper, who has been nominated for the NWSL Save of the Week in each of the past four weeks, knocked down Aissata Traore in the box and then dove the wrong way on the ensuing penalty kick.
Bay outshot Boston 19-8 in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.
The expansion side had started slowly, losing its first five games and scoring just one goal, but it is now unbeaten in its last five.
Bay FC has three more games before the World Cup break – at Portland on Wednesday, home against Chicago on May 24, and at Orlando on May 29.
