ROSE GARDEN>>A team from BASIS Independent Silicon Valley finished eighth in the Middle School National Championship Tournament in Chicago the weekend of May 9.
The team was among 192 teams from across 30 states, including 18 teams from California, competing in the national championship. Team members were Ishani Dasgupta, Ishaan Dinesh, Andrew Fu and Aditya Hosur.
BASIS Silicon Valley spent four playoff games on the brink of elimination. They defeated teams from Chappaqua, NY; Katy, Texas; and Indianapolis, Ind., before falling to the eventual champions, St. Mark’s School of Texas from Dallas.
Ishaan Dinesh was honored as an all-star for correctly answering 58 tossup questions in the preliminary rounds.
The Midwest-based National Academic Quiz Tournament organizes quiz bowl championships for middle schools, high schools and colleges in North America. Competitors answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports and popular culture.
ALMADEN>> Leland High School student Cindy Wang earned a judge’s recognition award in the drawing category for her work “You Can Never Wash It All Away” at the May 2 awards ceremony for ArtNow 2026, the annual juried show at New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) for high school students in Santa Clara County.
Wang was among the 97 student artists whose work was chosen for the show, which featured the largest number of artists ever to exhibit. NUMU received more than 600 submissions from 53 high schools on the theme “Before/Between/Beyond.” The works selected for the show represent 36 high schools.
NUMU awarded over $10,000 in cash prizes and scholarships at the May 2 ceremony. First and second place were awarded in eight artistic categories, as well as Judge’s Recognitions, Best in Show, Staff Choice and People’s Choice awards.
The ArtNow exhibit runs through July 19 at NUMU, located in the Los Gatos Civic Center at 106 E. Main St.
