Carmel had played two teams from the West Catholic Athletic League this season and lost to both, by an average of nine runs.

But those teams, St. Francis and Valley Christian, are the top two seeds in the Central Coast Section’s strongest playoff bracket.

Archbishop Mitty finished seventh in the WCAL, a down year by its standards but by no means a pushover, as Carmel painfully witnessed Tuesday night.

The San Jose school made the trip to Monterey’s Sollecito Ballpark for a Division II semifinal and handed top-seeded Carmel a humbling 21-0 loss.

The game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Fifth-seeded Mitty scored eight in the first, three in the second, two in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Carmel had one hit and four errors.

Austin Mak had four hits, including a triple, and four RBIs. He also scored three runs. Mitty also got three hits and two RBIs from Elijah Kroenung, two hits and three RBIs from Ethan Chase and two hits and three RBIs from Kelen Johnson.

The Monrachs (17-11) will play Burlingame or Palma for the championship on Friday at Excite Ballpark in San Jose.

Carmel finished 22-7.

Division III

No. 1 Menlo School 7, No. 5 Aptos 6 (9 innings): In a wild game that extended two additional innings, Menlo pulled even in the home half of the ninth when a balk was called with two outs and the bases loaded and then won when Renner Barnett singled to left to drive in Liam Widner with the walk-off run at Santa Clara University.

Menlo, last season’s CCS Division V champion, had scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to stay alive.

Barnett and Widner each had two hits and an RBI, and Jack Freehill had two hits and scored a run as Menlo (19-10) advanced to the championship game against third-seeded Wilcox on Thursday at Excite Ballpark.

Aptos finished 14-9.

No. 3 Wilcox 7, No. 2 Hollister 0: The Santa Clara school cruised into the title game with an impressive win on the road over Hollister.

Josh Porda pitched a two-hitter, striking out six and walking five in a complete-game effort. 

Junior center fielder Preston Jetson went 2 for 2 and knocked in two runs. Samuel Martinez, Ryan Cabildo, Isaiah Mata and Max Hales Tzoutzov each had an RBI.

Division IV

No. 5 Piedmont Hills 13, No. 1 Harbor 9: Senior Jake Paskert went 3 for 3 with a home run and a triple as Piedmont Hills upset top-seeded Harbor at West Valley College. 

The Pirates scored eight runs in the first inning and never gave up the lead as they advanced to their second section championship game in school history and first since 2015. 

Freshman Joaquin Carlos had two RBIs while Josh Gomez, Jayden Arciniega, Travis Linane and Christian Bustamante each knocked in a run. 

Piedmont Hills will play Santa Cruz for the section crown on Thursday at Excite Ballpark.

No. 3 Santa Cruz 6, No. 2 Los Altos 2: Santa Cruz scored three times in the first and twice in the third to set the tone early at Santa Clara University.

The Cardinals (17-11) got two RBIs from Ethan Reinecke and one each from Micah Mohamed, Adam Fowler and Caleb Camylo. 

Los Altos’ runs were both scored off defensive miscues – Jonah Altschuler reached home on a balk and Mitesh Jain scored on an error.

Los Altos finished 13-16. 

SOFTBALL

Division II 

No. 7 Monterey 10, No. 6 Burlingame 3: Monterey scored consistently – in every inning but one – and prolifically in a five-run fifth at Capuchino High to punch its ticket to the D-II title game.

The Toreadors (15-10) got two RBIs from Kayleekai Manglona and Denae Lee and one from Bella Berry and Brooklyn Yamashita. 

Burlingame (17-9) got two RBIs from Kiley Lyons and one from Brooke Arce.

Division V

No. 2 Santa Clara 17, No. 3 North Monterey County 16 (8 innings): Santa Clara needed an epic rally to claw back into this semifinal game at Los Gatos High School – and the Bruins got it.

They scored nine runs in the home half of the fifth inning to pull even 14-14.

The teams then traded runs in the sixth and didn’t score in the seventh, which sent this wild game to extra innings.

North Monterey County scored in the top half of the frame and Santa Clara answered with two in the bottom half to the advance to the final on Saturday at West Valley College.

The Bruins will play the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between Gunn and Silver Creek for the championship.

Victoria Calvillo had four hits, scored three runs and drove in three runs and Kyla Perkins had three hits and three RBIs to lead Santa Clara, which improved to 18-9.

NMC finished 19-9.
