A fugitive wanted for killings in San Jose and Orange County has been extradited from Laos after a decade on the run, authorities said.

Myung Jin Kim, 31, was taken into custody by the San Jose Police Department on Wednesday to face murder charges in a June 27, 2016, ambush killing of a man who was not the intended target, according to a joint news release by local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Kim, a South Korean national, also faces charges in the September 2018 killing of a friend he shot six times after an argument over money in a parking lot in Westminster, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

In the San Jose case, authorities said Kim orchestrated the ambush killing of a man in a residential neighborhood on the 1700 block of Cape Aston Court. Kim had targeted a victim in the murder-for-hire plot, but the hitmen killed an innocent bystander who was driving a similar car, police said.

Laotian authorities took Kim into custody in late May for immigration violations, and he was booked by the Anaheim Police Department before being transported to Santa Clara County this week. His extradition marks the first time a fugitive has been returned to the U.S. from Laos.

“Mr. Kim’s cowardly acts of violence finally caught up with him, despite being halfway across the globe,” Patrick Grandy, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, said in a statement.

Kim is expected to be prosecuted in Santa Clara County for the 2016 killing before being returned to Orange County for prosecution in the 2018 case.

“No matter how much time passes or how far someone runs, accountability can still find them,” San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph said in a statement. “Our homicide detectives never gave up on this case, and their persistence, combined with extraordinary support from our law enforcement partners, brought this suspect back to San Jose to face justice.”
