San Jose Earthquakes defender Daniel Munie won’t be relaxing on a beach during the Major League Soccer All-Star break.
He’ll be in Charlotte for the MLS All-Star Game.
The Quakes’ 26-year-old center back was named to the league’s All-Star squad as a coach selection, marking his first appearance on the team in his fourth year.
The game will be played at 5 p.m. on July 29 and air on Apple TV. The MLS All-Stars will face off against a corresponding All-Star team from top Mexican league, Liga MX.
“I’m honored to be selected to the MLS All-Star Game for the first time,” Munie said in a news release. “I want to thank my teammates, coaches, fans and the whole San Jose Earthquakes organization for their support. I’m looking forward to representing the club and experiencing All-Star Week in Charlotte.”
Munie has anchored the back line for the Earthquakes, who currently stand tied for first in the Western Conference on points with Vancouver Whitecaps FC and third in the Supporters’ Shield standings.
Now in his fourth season after being drafted 10th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft out of Indiana University, the St. Louis native has emerged as one of the premier central halves in the league, pairing with second-year man Reid Roberts in the middle to help shore up a defense that has gone from conceding 63 goals last year to just 15 at the midseason break.
Munie is the fastest center back in the MLS and has clocked a top speed of 22.37 miles per hour according to Sportec. He has put his signature speed to use on the offensive end as well, amassing two goals and two assists in the Quakes’ first 15 games.
