LOS GATOS — A new community grocery store and fitness club are set to replace major tenants that had departed a Los Gatos shopping center.
Gus’s Community Market, a family-owned grocery store, and Club Studio, a fitness center, each signed leases for spaces at Cornerstone of Los Gatos.
The grocery store will take over an 18,000-square-foot site once occupied by Whole Foods Market at 15980 Los Gatos Blvd. after it relocated to a larger location in the city.
The fitness center occupies a 19,000-square-foot space at 15920 Los Gatos Blvd. where Rite Aid had operated until the retail chain went through a bankruptcy and shut down all its physical sites.
With the two leases, Cilker, the Los Gatos-based real estate manager for the shopping center, has successfully repositioned it after the departures of key retailers.
“We are thrilled to successfully complete the strategic asset management and leasing plan that brings new and vibrant tenants to the Uptown Los Gatos community,” said Keyston Smith, chief executive officer of Cilker.
Gus’s Community Markets opened its first of five locations in San Francisco when co-founders Gus Vardakastanis and his father Dimitri Vardakastanis launched Haight-Ashbury Produce in 1981. Los Gatos represents Gus’s first location outside of the city.
“Los Gatos is a special community with a strong appreciation for quality food, local businesses, and personal service,” said Dimitri Vardakastanis, co-owner of Gus’s. “We are excited about becoming a part of the neighborhood.”
Gus’s is expected to open in the spring of 2027, along with the grocery retailer’s in-house cafe partner.
Club Fitness is slated to add what Cilker describes as a “cutting-edge” fitness center that adds amenities, boutique studio classes and wellness services in one gym.
