SAN JOSE — A city worker was killed while repairing a streetlight Tuesday in San Jose, officials said.
“We are sad to share that a member of our City of San Jose family lost his life today while serving the public,” Mayor Matt Mahan, City Manager Jennifer Maguire and Department of Transportation Director John Ristow said in a joint statement.
“The employee, from the Department of Transportation, was fatally injured while repairing a streetlight — helping to keep San Jose drivers and pedestrians safe,” the statement continued. “We are deeply heartbroken about his passing and grateful for his public service.”
The statement did not identify the worker. It also did not provide any additional details about how he died, but the wording suggested he may have been hit by a motorist.
“We urge the public to keep your attention on the road,” the statement said. “Always slow down and make space for maintenance workers, construction crews, and emergency services stopped in the roadway.”
Spokespersons for the city manager’s office, mayor and San Jose Police Department did not immediately return a message seeking additional details about the case.
