Hands-only CPR

The Milpitas Fire Department is offering free hands-only CPR training at Fire Station 2 on Saturday, Oct 3, 10, 17 and 24, with 30-minute sessions held between 9 a.m. and noon.

Hands-only CPR is a simplified technique that teaches participants the basics of chest compressions in an emergency, without the need for rescue breathes. While the course does not result in formal CPR certification, it equips residents with practical knowledge that could make a difference in the moments before emergency responders arrive.

This training is open only to Milpitas residents, who must show proof of residency. To register, visit milpitas.info/handsonlyc.

Poetry to Music

Schola Cantorum Silicon Valley is accepting entries from Santa Clara County high school students for its fourth Poetry to Music Contest. The winning original poem will be arranged as a choral composition by composer Maria Thompson Corley and performed by the Los Altos-based choir.

The theme for this year’s contest is “Belonging: Finding Your Place in the World.” A panel of judges, including Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Yosimer Reyes, will evaluate all submissions.

The winning poem will premiere during Schola’s concert, “The Poet Speaks, from Shakespeare to Tomorrow,” on May 23, 2027. The concert program will also feature works by composers who have set the poetry of Shakespeare, Dylan Thomas, Sara Teasdale and others to choral music.

The first-place winner will also receive $600. The second-place poet gets $250, and third place, $250.

Contest submissions will be accepted through Nov. 16. Poems must include a title and be 20 lines or fewer. For more information and to enter online, visit https://scholacantorum.org/poetry.
