North Beach Pizza’s Berkeley branch is moving from one side of downtown to the other.
Gustavo Ramirez, who helps run the restaurant and is the son of North Beach Pizza Berkeley’s owner of the same name, confirmed to Nosh that the pizza spot will be relocating to 2072 University Avenue, which formerly housed Bobby G’s Pizzeria.
The San Francisco pizza chain was first opened in the North Beach neighborhood in 1982 by Brazilian native and Bay Area businessman Altamir Souza, whose price-friendly menu and early adoption of a digital delivery system appealed to San Franciscans looking for a quick bite. Four years later, Souza opened his second location a block away, before moving on to open three others across the city. Souza later expanded across the Bay to San Mateo, Daly City, Half Moon Bay and Berkeley.
Over the last few decades, the restaurant chain has switched ownership across its locations. Now, Ramirez’s family owns seven of the remaining restaurants, while Souza owns the remaining one in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset neighborhood.
According to Ramirez, this isn’t just a relocation — it’s a homecoming.
“So years ago we were actually located on University Avenue at 1598 University Ave. and North Beach Pizza was there for many years,” Ramirez explained. “But then the land was sold to developers so we had to move and we relocated to where we are now, 2420 Shattuck Ave.”
Bobby G’s abruptly closed in April, following a lawsuit from a former employee and, as Nosh reported, a pattern of delayed payments and other managerial issues. Once the former Bobby G’s space became available, Ramirez and his family jumped at the chance to sign a lease.
“It was just really ideal, really perfect. Everything kind of lined up perfectly for us to be able to make that move back to University Avenue,” Ramirez said. “We signed a lease this month in Berkeley, and we’ve been fixing things up and getting the store ready. And if all goes well, we expect to open within the next few weeks.”
Ramirez also confirmed that the restaurant’s menu won’t change, and patrons can expect classics like the pepperoni pizza, cheese stromboli, and crispy chicken parmigiana, alongside its more unique offerings, like the Alcatraz pizza, a ranch sauced pizza pie topped with chicken, gorgonzola, red onions and a spiral of Buffalo sauce.
