Swamp things

Students at Rolling Hills Middle School are bringing fractured fairy tales to life in “Shrek The Musical JR” Nov. 5-7 at Campbell’s Heritage Theatre.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and Broadway musical, the show follows everyone’s favorite ogre and his pal Donkey on their quest to rescue princess Fiona and take his swamp back from fairy tale misfits who have been banished by Lord Farquaad.

The production is presented in part by the Theater Educational Production and Scholarship Fund of Friends of the Heritage Theatre.

“This is the second year that Friends of the Heritage Theatre has partnered with Campbell Union School District by bringing middle school students into the Heritage Theatre to perform on a professional stage,” Yvette Huygen, president of the Friends of the Heritage Theatre, said in a release. “This year, we’re building on what we learned. We are incorporating feedback from students and families, and we are looking for new ways to make the theater experience even more magical and memorable for everyone involved.”

Director Carol Romo said this year’s show was chosen with that goal in mind.

“One of the things I love most about ‘Shrek’ is its message that we don’t have to fit someone else’s idea of perfect to be worthy of friendship, acceptance and love,” Romo said. “That is an especially important message for young performers. I want every child in our cast to know that they don’t have to change who they are to belong.”
