SAN JOSE — Two people died in a four-vehicle collision Tuesday morning on Highway 87, authorities said.
The two victims were an adult and a juvenile, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol San Jose office. Their names will be publicly released following confirmation of their identities and notification of their next of kin.
Emergency responders reported to the scene of the crash, on the northbound side of the highway near Curtner Avenue, at 10:49 a.m., authorities said.
Upon their arrival, they found that four vehicles were involved in the collision, authorities said. Three of the four involved vehicles — two Teslas and a Lexus — caught fire.
The two deceased victims were passengers in the Lexus, authorities added. The Lexus’s driver, as well as the driver of one of the Teslas, suffered unknown injuries and were taken to the hospital.
The driver of a Toyota Sienna, the fourth involved vehicle, remained at the scene of the crash and cooperated with authorities.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. They do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors.
Northbound Highway 87 remained closed Tuesday afternoon, with traffic being diverted onto Curtner Avenue, authorities said.
Anyone with further information on the collision is asked to contact the CHP San Jose office at 408-961-0900.
