SANTA CLARA – A 21-year-old San Jose man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and reckless driving in connection with a fatal collision roughly a year ago in Santa Clara, police said.
The two-vehicle crash happened on Stevens Creek Boulevard near Tyler Street around 12:20 p.m. on Dec. 10, 2024, according to the Santa Clara Police Department.
Police said a pickup truck was traveling westbound when it collided with an SUV making a left turn from the eastbound direction into a driveway.
Officers arrived to find the SUV driver, a 66-year-old San Jose man, on the ground and his passenger, a 65-year-old San Jose woman, inside the vehicle, both suffering from life-threatening injuries, police said. They were rushed to an area hospital, where the man died.
Police said a passenger in the pickup truck was also injured, but the driver was unscathed.
An investigation ultimately determined the pickup truck driver, identified as Kevin Alexander Alvareztostadorizo, was “traveling at a speed that was both excessive and reckless for the roadway and conditions,” police said. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
Alvareztostadorizo was arrested around 6 p.m. Monday and booked into Santa Clara County jail.
“The safety of everyone who lives, works, and travels in Santa Clara depends on people driving with care and good judgment,” Santa Clara police Chief Cory Morgan said in a statement Wednesday.
“When that standard is abandoned and a life is taken through reckless or dangerous driving,” he continued, “we will not hesitate to pursue the most serious charges the facts support.”
