North Texas Food Bank and the University of North Texas at Dallas will distribute Thanksgiving meals to about 500 families during a drive-through event on Saturday, Nov. 22.

“This event comes at a crucial time,” said Trisha Cunningham, the food bank’s president and CEO. “Our partners allow us to respond quickly when our community needs help.”

North Texas continues to report high levels of food insecurity. According to Feeding America, Texas has the nation’s highest number of food-insecure residents.

Within the North Texas Food Bank’s 12-county area, nearly 744,000 people, including 250,000 children, face hunger, according to a news release.

The distribution will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at 7300 University Hills Blvd. Food will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis, the release says.

Each family will receive a turkey and roughly 60 pounds of food. Volunteers will also provide thermal clothing.

“We’re proud to support our students, employees and neighbors in Southern Dallas,” said Warren von Eschenbach, president of UNT Dallas.

The Albertsons and Tom Thumb Foundation awarded NTFB a $3 million multiyear grant earlier this year, the release says.

“The holidays can be financially stressful for many families,” said Christy Lara, a spokesperson for the company.

How to participate

No registration is required, but attendees must arrive in a vehicle.

Families will be asked to provide their household size and ZIP code. Identification is not required, according to NTFB.

Residents who need help outside the event can find nearby food pantries or mobile food distributions on the NTFB website.
