Happy Monday, all! Bananas are one of America’s favorite fruits, but do you know how to pick the best one for your health needs? I learned all about it this week. Let’s jump in.
Pick the best banana for your health goals
Bananas can be a nutritious part of any diet, but you might not have known that their nutritional makeup shifts as they ripen. My colleague Maxine Yeung, who’s also a dietitian, recently wrote about how that works and how to take advantage of it to meet your health goals.
For example, if you’re trying to keep your blood sugar levels in check, she said to choose a greener, less ripe banana. Not only does it contain less sugar, but it also has more resistant starch, a carb that acts like fiber and promotes good gut bacteria. Suffer from irritable bowel syndrome? Pick a ripe banana instead, as it’s easier to digest. Keep these and Yeung’s other tips in mind the next time you plop a bunch into your shopping cart. [Yahoo Health]
