It’s not every day you see two high-ranking US officials dropping to the floor for push-ups in the Pentagon – let alone in jeans and cowboy boots. But that’s exactly what happened when 71-year-old Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. teamed up with 45-year-old Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth for a workout they’ve dubbed the ‘Pete and Bobby Challenge’.
The premise is simple: 50 pull-ups and 100 push-ups. The catch? All the reps must be completed in under five minutes.
The pair filmed their attempt at the Pentagon Athletic Centre, then swiftly uploaded the footage to social media. Hegseth made sure to credit their inspiration: famously athletic man Donald Trump. ‘Thank you, President Trump, for setting the example,’ Hegseth said. ‘Presidential physical fitness – Make America Healthy Again, fit, not fat.’

The workout caught the eye of exercise researcher and YouTuber Jeff Nippard, who was less than impressed. Of the pull-up form on display, Nippard says, ‘This is one of the worst (and most common) pull-up mistakes I see guys make: refusing assistance. It takes an ego check to use a pull-up machine, a band or a partner for assistance, but serious lifters find it respectable. Acknowledge your current strength level and build from there.’
Nippard’s advice puts the challenge in a different light. While some may be fired up to match the politicians’ feat, it’s important to note that strict pull-ups at that volume are a reach, to say the least. Without scaling the load by using bands, partners, or assisted machines, most gym-goers will gas out early, reduce range of motion, or worse, risk injury.
If you do want to recreate the Pete and Bobby Challenge, you can scale the reps and take breaks when needed to avoid form brea down. You may be skipping the bravado by ditching the timer and completing the reps throughout your workout, but you’re more likely to improve your muscle and strength gains. You can also include bands or machines to regress the pull-ups. Check out our guides on push-ups and pull-ups to perfect the technique and learn exercise variations, here:
