A new multi-sports event aimed at celebrating and encouraging active lifestyles among older adults is set to launch in York next month.
GLL, the charitable social enterprise operating under the Better brand, has announced plans to host the Senior Club Games at York Leisure Centre on Wednesday 1 October.

The initiative is being delivered in partnership with England Netball and is open to both members and non-members aged 60 and over.
The event will feature a variety of activities including pickleball, walking netball, a timed swim, and a timed cycle, culminating in an awards ceremony to honour participants’ achievements.
Natalie Thomas, GLL’s Community Sports Manager for York, said: “This is a fantastic initiative designed to keep our beloved seniors active, foster new friendships, and improve their social, mental and physical wellbeing. This event allows us to celebrate the sporting talent amongst our older members of the community while demonstrating the benefits that regular exercise and an active lifestyle can bring.”

Participation costs £4.50 per person, payable by card at York Leisure Centre, Burnholme Sports Centre, or Energise Leisure Centre. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance via the Senior Club Games 2025 website or by contacting Natalie Thomas directly at natalie.thomas@gll.org.

The Senior Club Games is part of a nationwide programme developed by GLL to address a perceived lack of major multi-sports events for older adults in the UK. It aims to promote active aging, showcase the capabilities of older people through sport, and highlight the benefits of physical activity at any age.
In addition to the games, Better leisure centres across York offer weekly senior sessions tailored to older adults, including:
Energise Leisure Centre – Tuesday mornings (times vary)
York Leisure Centre – Tuesdays, 11am–1.30pm
Burnholme Sports Centre – Wednesdays, 10am–12pm
These sessions provide a welcoming space for seniors to stay active, learn new skills, and connect with others over complimentary tea and coffee. Discounted memberships are available for those aged 60+, offering access to gym facilities and instructor-led classes.
