As the weather turns, the days grow shorter and your calendar begins to fill up with Christmas planning, it can be harder to stay active throughout the autumn and winter months. But Amazon shoppers have been snapping up a home fitness gadget that could help when it’s too cold and wet to exercise outside.

The WeightWorld Vibration Plate Exercise Machine is designed to engage all your muscles for a short workout that can be done in front of the TV, making it a smaller and easier alternative to the likes of a home treadmill or exercise bike. Priced at £89.99, the brand claims that just 10 minutes on this vibration pad provides similar benefits to an hour of jogging or cycling, making it ideal for households who want to improve their fitness but are pressed for spare time.

But what does a vibration plate actually do, and does it really have health benefits? According to Healthline, they may help to improve strength, balance and bone density, as well as relieving chronic pain, boosting brain health, and contributing to weight loss by sending vibrations that cause your muscles to contract and relax, although the experts have noted that “more research is needed” to prove these benefits.

The Royal Osteoporosis Society also says of vibration therapy: “These vibrations work in the same way as exercise where the muscles pull on bones. This gives bones work to do which helps to keep them strong.” However, it also adds that research has not proven that vibration therapy makes bones less likely to break.

With more than 2,700 reviews from Amazon shoppers, the WeightWorld Vibration Plate has earned an average rating of 4.6 out of five stars, with many saying that they had seen results from using it from weight loss to more toned muscles. While £90 is a considerable investment, it’s worth noting that it’s cheaper than the top-rated option at Argos, which is the Reviber Plus Oscillating Vibration Plate for £250, as well as the cheapest choice at Currys, the BODI-TEK Whole Body Smart Vibration Plate for £140.

One person who bought the WeightWorld Vibration Plate fed back: “I wasn’t too sure about the claims made for this product but thought it was worth a go. Well let me tell you it is amazing. In no time at all I am more supple than I have ever been and feel and look totally toned. Excellent quality and very quiet whilst in use.”

Another shopper praised: “Easy setup and helping in weight loss and tone – lost a few stone recently and the weight loss has slowed down so I was looking to add to my fitness routine on my off-treadmill days. Love this machine – I have only started to use it but the results are really kicking in.”

A third reviewer said: “Makes you feel toned and revigorated. It really helps with water retention too. After only few uses I can see a difference in centimetres and cellulite much improved.”

And someone else wrote: “Bought to help with my achy knees, so far seems to be working ok plus helping to firm up my thighs. It’s nice and compact and fits easily under sofa and light enough to move about which is also a bonus.”

However, several customers complained that the lack of instructions provided with the vibration plate made it difficult to use. “Instructions tell you nothing, there are pre-set programs and some exercises but no idea how long to do them or at what speed,” one person remarked.

And not everyone found it comfortable to use, with a different reviewer saying: “The most disappointing thing is that it’s incredibly uncomfortable to stand on without shoes. Very spiky nodules which I can’t see the point of.”
