A “Super Greens” dietary supplement powder under the Member’s Mark brand was recalled amid an ongoing salmonella outbreak, the Food and Drug Administration announced.

The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating reports of salmonella infections in multiple states, including three cases in Virginia. Eleven people have fallen ill in the outbreak, and three have been hospitalized.

The FDA said an investigation showed all illnesses in the outbreak can be traced back to a single lot of organic moringa leaf powder from Vallon Farm Direct PVT LTD of Jodhpur, India. Officials said the batch of moringa powder was supplied to multiple distributors across the United States.

As a result of the investigation, all Member’s Mark “Super Greens” dietary supplement powder products were recalled, regardless of lot code or “best by date.” The items were sold at Sam’s Club stores nationwide.

The agency indicated more products could be recalled as it continues to investigate the point of contamination.

“We moved quickly to remove this product from our impacted clubs as soon as we were notified by the supplier,” Sam’s Club said in a Nov. 3 statement shared with USA TODAY. “The health and safety of our members is our top priority.”

Why was Member’s Mark ‘Super Greens’ powder recalled?

The distribution and sale of Member’s Mark brand “Super Greens” powder was tied to a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections. The cause of the illnesses was linked to a single lot of moringa leaf powder from an India-based manufacturer.

Which Member’s Mark ‘Super Greens’ powders were recalled?

All of them, regardless of lot code or “best by date.”

The affected products were sold at Sam’s Club stores across the United States and online.

Additional products from other stores may be recalled as the FDA’s investigation continues. While Sam’s Club has ceased distribution and product sales, there may be consumers who still have the product at their homes, according to the FDA’s release.

The agency has encouraged consumers to avoid eating or serving Member’s Mark “Super Greens” dietary supplement powder. Consumers in possession of the recalled product can either discard or return it to the place of purchase.

11 cases reported in salmonella outbreak

The salmonella outbreak linked to moringa leaf powder includes 11 cases across seven states, according to the CDC. Three of those cases have resulted in hospitalization.

Infections have been reported in the following states:

Florida (2)Kansas (2)Michigan (1)North Carolina (1)New York (1)South Carolina (1)Virginia (3)Salmonella symptoms

According to the FDA, symptoms of salmonella infection usually occur within 12 to 72 hours after consuming the contaminated food, and symptoms could last four and seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

“Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections,” the FDA added.
