A popular dietary supplement is being recalled nationwide after being linked to 45 illnesses and 12 hospitalizations across 21 states — including Massachusetts.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all cases are caused by a Salmonella outbreak linked to Live It Up Super Greens supplement powder.
No deaths have been reported as of Jan. 23.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.

“Healthy persons infected with Salmonella, often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain,” the Food and Drug Administration warns.
“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections.”
Consumers are advised to stop using the products immediately and throw them away or return them for a refund.
Products are packed in green pouches and marked with lot numbers beginning with A or 3 and sold online by major retailers including Amazon.com, Walmart.com and Ebay.

Among the 21 states affected by illnesses linked to this recall are four New England states with one person in Maine, two people in Massachusetts, two people in Vermont and one person in Connecticut.
