A local pub is bringing something fresh to the table with what they’re calling Adelaide’s first 100 per cent gluten-free high tea.
“I’ve been to fantastic high teas, but as a gluten-free guest, I’d end up with dry bread or a few ‘safe’ options that were a bit disappointing,” shared Port Admiral Hotel owner Simone Douglas. “We wanted to provide coeliacs and people with allergies a premium experience where they weren’t an outsider at the table.”
If you’re gluten-free or know someone who is, you may already be familiar with the Port Admiral Hotel. This is a place that prides itself on creating a food experience that does not discriminate. They understand how hard it can be to find a place to eat that will take your allergies seriously, and with a kitchen that’s 100 per cent gluten-free, you can you can dine here worry-free.
“A lot of venues advertise gluten-free, but often it’s just pulling items off the menu until you’re left with whatever’s safe – and that’s not usually a fantastic result. This is a curated experience that people can enjoy, with all the things you’d expect from a high tea.”
“We’ll have house-made scones with house-made jams, fresh cream – all the things you’d expect from a traditional high tea – but without any risk of cross-contamination.”
Simone shares that this is curated by executive chef Tiffany Hughes. She makes everything from scratch to ensure its safety!
“We’ll have a rotating menu each month, and we’re running it once a month,” shared Simone.
“We’ve also created two levels – a budget-friendly option and a premium option. If you take the premium, you’ll get premium bubbles or Moscato on arrival, along with all of the delights on the menu. The budget-friendly is just a step down from that – a couple fewer options and house bubbles instead of premium champagne.”
On the current menu, you’ll find mini tarts, friands and classic ribbon sandwiches with fresh gluten-free bread. There will be different flavours, but you can expect classics like salmon and capers with crème fraîche, and other seasonal fillings. Simone says they’re still in the middle of testing and finalising the menu at the moment, so they have yet to reveal the final menu.
“Our first one is Saturday 6th of September. Bookings are open now, and they’re filling up pretty fast – Adelaide’s coeliacs are a little bit excited at this point, which is great!”
“The most exciting thing is not having to ask what you can and can’t have – just being able to celebrate with your friends or family and enjoy the high tea experience in what is the oldest building in the Port.”
Bookings are now open for the 6th of September, and you can book directly for the high tea event. They’re also taking private bookings for groups, so if you’ve been looking to get the girls together, this is just the thing!
