NEW YORK (VINnews) — A healthy diet and regular exercise may help slow the progression of prostate cancer, though the evidence remains early and more studies are under way, WebMD said Thursday.

The health site recommended that men cut back on sugar, choose leaner meats, eat plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables, and avoid fatty dairy products. It also advised combining cardiovascular exercise with weight training.
Prostate cancer is among the most common cancers in American men. Some studies have associated plant-forward eating patterns, weight control and regular physical activity with slower disease progression or improved metabolic markers, especially in men on active surveillance. Researchers have also examined lower-fat diets, reduced sugar intake and mixed cardio-and-strength routines.
WebMD stressed that the findings are preliminary. Lifestyle changes are not a substitute for medical care, and patients should consult their doctors before making significant changes to diet or exercise.
Additional research is continuing on whether specific eating patterns and fitness programs can meaningfully delay the need for more aggressive treatment.
