The Food and Drug Administration has issued an urgent recall for several moringa-based supplement powders after multiple consumers became sick and three were hospitalized in a multi-state Salmonella Richmond outbreak.

According to the FDA, the outbreak has been linked to moringa leaf powder imported from Jodhpur, India, and used in a variety of products sold nationwide — including the “Food To Live” brand of Organic Moringa Leaf Powder and Supergreens Powder Mix.

“Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis,” the FDA said.

Symptoms often include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The agency warns that severe infections may cause high fever, headaches, lethargy, rashes, blood in the urine or stool, and — in rare cases — can be fatal.

The recall activity began earlier this month when the distributor Africa Imports discovered that some of its Organic Moringa Leaf Powder tested positive for Salmonella. The company issued a recall for its 1-kilogram packages sold online after June 5, 2025.

Shortly after, Food To Live, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., recalled its Organic Moringa Leaf Powder and Organic Supergreens Powder Mix after state officials detected Salmonella in samples linked to ill consumers.

The products were available through major online marketplaces including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Etsy and eBay, and were distributed nationwide.

A day later — on Nov. 13 — the FDA announced it was partnering with state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Richmond tied to moringa leaf powder.

To date, officials have confirmed 11 illnesses and three hospitalizations across seven states: Florida, Kansas, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Recalled products include:

Surfaces, containers, or scoops that came in contact with the powder should also be sanitized to prevent cross-contamination.

The investigation remains ongoing.
