The leisure facility will be on Ferndale Recreation Ground, which is situated along the Western Flyer, stretching between Great Western Way and Ferndale Road.

The space is owned by Swindon Borough Council and is maintained by Central Swindon North Parish Council under a maintenance deed.

The proposal, submitted earlier this year and recently given the green light, suggests installing eight pieces of fixed outdoor exercise equipment costing just over £7,000.

The equipment aims to provide gentle, structured physical activity, with a focus on balance, flexibility, and low-impact cardiovascular exercise.

It includes a double health walker, a double Slalom Skier, a double Squat Push, Tai Chi discs, a waist twister, a Double Strength Challenger, and two bicycles.

The apparatus, which is certified as outdoor fitness equipment, is expected to encourage informal workouts for the community and other users of the Western Flyer route.

The equipment will feature small structures of slim metal, a familiar sight at outdoor gyms across the country.

These will be installed on robust foundations with appropriate safety surfaces, such as grass mats.

The area will also include a small information signboard on using the equipment and for safety guidance.

In keeping with the openness of the recreation ground, the installation will not be fenced off, allowing it to blend naturally into the wider recreational area.

The outdoor gym is complementary to the existing children’s play area within the recreational ground.

Community health and active travel benefits are at the heart of this proposal, providing free-to-use, informal exercise opportunities for the local community and users of the Western Flyer route.

The outdoor gym installation is described as a modest, well-designed, enhancement to the existing recreational area which respects the surrounding area’s character.

A competitive quotation process will determine the exact supplier of the gym apparatus, with Broxap / Sunshine Gym’s Hospital Rehabilitation Package currently being considered.

The package’s listing says: “Tai Chi Discs, waist twisting exercise and the arm & pedal bicycle gentle improve flexibility and coordination.

“The static bike, low-impact walker and ski simulator are cardio units which also work on users’ balance.

“Users can focus on building their strength back up using a low resistance leg press and the challenge wheel.

“The Arm & Pedal Bicycle and Tai Chi Discs can also be provided as wheelchair accessible options.”
