A new study suggests your Nintendo Switch could do more than keep you entertained, with a new study finding that playing exercise games on the console was linked to improvements in depression symptoms, anxiety, and sleep quality.

Gaming and mental health have increasingly become a focus for researchers over the past decade, with studies exploring everything from games helping with stress reduction and social connection to cognitive function and emotional well-being.

The Nintendo Switch has been at the center of some of that research thanks to games like Ring Fit Adventure, which combine physical exercise with traditional gameplay, and now a new study has suggested it’s actually responsible for helping ease subthreshold depression, anxiety, sleep quality, and more.

The randomized controlled trial involved 84 participants, with 81 completing the study. Those assigned to the Nintendo Switch intervention completed an eight-week exergaming program using the console, while the control group continued with their usual activities.

According to the researchers, participants in the Nintendo Switch group experienced significantly greater reductions in depressive symptoms compared to the control group across every measured follow-up period. Sleep quality also improved significantly throughout the study, while anxiety scores showed meaningful improvements immediately after the intervention and again during the later follow-up.
