Fort Lauderdale has a new upscale kosher dinner option on North Ocean Boulevard. Koji & Coal is serving a menu that moves across Asian cuisines, with fire-driven cooking and a few American steakhouse touches.
An Asian menu with a kosher twist
The menu draws on Thai, Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese flavors rather than sticking to one style. To start, there is a pastrami eggroll with kimchi, cabbage and a hoisin-pear dipping sauce, alongside Korean fried chicken glazed with sweet soy, ginger and gochujang.
Koji fried rice comes with galbi wagyu beef; beef tartare is served over crispy rice with black garlic and mango. Dumplings range from vegetable and chicken to pan-seared beef gyoza.
Main dishes include General Tso’s Koji Chicken, marinated in shio koji before being double-fried and served with jasmine rice. The Thai green curry pairs confit chicken leg with coconut milk, Thai basil and kaffir lime. There is also wagyu beef lo mein, a Sichuan pepper steak and miso-glazed black cod with fire-roasted bok choy. The menu crosses back to the grill for hanger steak, flat iron and ribeye, each with its own sides. It is the sort of range that lets one table order crispy, saucy, grilled and spicy dishes without committing to a single lane.
A new name at a familiar kosher address
Koji & Coal takes over the North Ocean Boulevard address previously home to PX Grill, the kosher Mediterranean restaurant listed in YeahThatsKosher’s earlier South Florida dining guide. The new concept swaps that Mediterranean menu for an Asian-American mix. Its name is a useful shorthand: koji appears in the chicken marinade, while the “coal” side shows up in the restaurant’s focus on char, smoke and fire-roasted plates.
