See the 2025 Des Moines Register Essential Restaurants
What are the best restaurants in Des Moines? These entries from the Des Moines Register’s Essential Restaurants list won’t let you down.
T.E. Alderman’s, the Nevada, Iowa, restaurant that specialized in allergy-friendly and gluten-free dishes alongside traditional favorites, closed on Oct. 10.
The restaurant owners announced the closing on Facebook, saying that “T.E. Alderman’s will discontinue regular dining room service as of Friday afternoon, October 10.”
The owners said that Pleis Farms Inc., which owns the restaurant, “will be transitioning to new name that better suits our mission, continuing to develop and market specialty gluten-free food products locally through farmers markets and regionally through other retail outlets.” Safehouse Foods, Myx mixes, and Baykd pastries and baked goods will continue to be sold.
Owner Mark Pleis opened T.E. Alderman’s a year ago in the historic Nevada Journal building at 1133 Sixth St. in Nevada.
Pleis, who has celiac disease, created the recipes in-house to include gluten-free pasta, bread items, and desserts. The kitchen used a combination of 28 different flours and starches.
The restaurant took its name from the first person to live in Nevada.
T.E. Alderman’s drew customers from the Des Moines and Ames metros who wanted gluten-free dishes made in a kitchen dedicated to avoiding cross-contamination. Diners could visit for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch.
