(WSET) — Summer heat means summer cravings.

There are actually some foods that can help you stay cool and hydrated.

When the temperatures climb, our food choices can look a little different.

Experts say fruits are key during hot summer days.

“Watermelon is great. We also have coconut, bananas because of the potassium and the electrolytes,” Fongeallaz said.

He says foods with high water content, including fruits and vegetables, can help people stay hydrated during the heat.

Some foods that you may want to add to your grocery cart next time you go shopping.

From lettuce to cucumbers filled with water, experts say vegetables and fruits like berries, oranges, and grapes can help keep you hydrated.

They also provide the vitamins your body needs.

Experts also say to avoid reaching for those salty snacks and fried foods because they can leave you feeling more sluggish and don’t give your body the nutrients it needs to keep up with the heat.

But what does a summer-ready lunch or meal actually look like?

People spending time outside say they’re making sure to bring foods and drinks that help them stay hydrated.

“I’m always carrying my water, but today I filled it with ice. I gotta stay hydrated,” one person said.

Another person said strawberries and watermelon are favorites for their family.

“Strawberries are a fan favorite with our kids, watermelon because I feel like there’s some natural water in it,” they said.

Others say bringing cold fruit is an easy way to stay refreshed.

“Just want to make sure we have some nice cold fruit to take with us so everyone can stay hydrated,” one person said.

And sometimes all you need is a sweet treat to cool down.

Andrew Ulrich, co-owner of Mister Goodies, says their gelato is a popular option on hot summer days.

“Our gelati is Italian ice and ice cream layered and super, super refreshing on a hot day,” Ulrich said.

“It’s the perfect end to a hot day. You know, you go to the pool, you go to the lake. How do we cap off a great day? We go to Mister Goodies afterwards,” Ulrich said.
