FAQs
What is pre-workout?

People use pre-workout as a nutritional supplement designed to promote energy and focus either in the gym or an athletic setting, using legal stimulants and amino acids to help improve muscular strength and endurance for a short window. Taken around 30 minutes before your workout, most high quality pre-workout powders typically use caffeine in some form as its main stimulant, combined with other ingredients like beta-alanine, citrulline malate, creatine and nitric oxide boosters to help maximise your lifts.

When is the best time to take pre-workout?

The time most manufacturers generally recommend you take energy-boosting pre-workout is around half an hour before you start your workout or training session. This gives your body the time to process the ingredients and have their desired effect, providing more focus and stamina. Many pre-workouts also contain a lot of caffeine to help reduce fatigue. Given that it is a diuretic, it also pays to take it a little while before you get to the gym—lest you be caught needing to rush to the bathroom midway through your workout.

How to find the best pre-workout for you

There are, of course, multiple different types of pre-workout supplements out there. However they can all be broadly grouped into the two categories of stimulant and non-stimulant pre-workouts. While stimulant-based pre-workouts deliver a shot of caffeine to boost energy levels (generally between 150mg to anywhere around 400mg for the super strong ones), non-stimulant pre-workouts eschew caffeine and other stimulants altogether, which can make them useful if you’re training at night and are concerned about getting a decent sleep post-workout. They also typically contain an ingredient list more geared towards helping you achieve a good muscle pump and improved performance and endurance—but always make sure to keep an eye out for proprietary blends, so that you can exactly what and how much of it you’re really consuming.

As caffeine is a widely-proven performance enhancer, stimulant-based pre-workouts are typically considered the more effective of the two branches, but choosing which one to get can be tricky. If you have a low caffeine tolerance or are just starting out, pre-workouts including lower-stim pre-workout (C4, which you can buy in supermarkets now, is a good example) will likely suffice. More hardcore lifters or those with a higher caffeine tolerance may need a stronger pre-workout, so be sure to check out the side of the label to see just how much caffeine and beta-alanine (one of the key ingredients that causes the famous tingly sensation pre-workout is often associated with) the one you’re buying contains.
