Coronation Street spoilers follow for the latest episode to air on ITV1 and stream online.

Coronation Street has aired a major change in the Bailey baby plot following a massive row.

Dee-Dee originally planned to let her brother James have custody of baby Laila, whose dad is the evil Joel Deering, but told him she’d changed her mind and wanted to raise her daughter.

Ed tried to get the family together over a breakfast to clear the air, but James couldn’t get over the betrayal. Dee-Dee tried to encourage him to air his frustrations, hoping they could move beyond it, but he just got more infuriated.

Out in the community garden, Dee-Dee admitted to Billy Mayhew that she could see his point of view, but insisted there was “no going back”.

Later on, Dee-Dee got called into work and, after she made a heartfelt apology, James offered to look after Laila. It looked like things had been smoothed over, with James saying he was fine with being “uncle James” rather than dad.

However, he answered a call from Ethan and stated he was still interested in taking up the job abroad and would send over the flight details.

“I wish it didn’t have to be like this, but your mum’s left me no choice,” he told Laila. “I hope one day you’ll both be able to understand.”

Later on, Dee-Dee and Ed bumped into Billy in the street, who said he saw James with suitcases getting into a taxi.

Back at the house, they found out Laila had gone and so was her blanket, with a panicked Dee-Dee adamant they call the police.

Michael soon walked out of the kitchen with Laila in hand, much to Dee-Dee’s relief. He told them about James’ job and how he was told to keep it quiet, as his brother didn’t want the family to try and stop him.

“He said he couldn’t be around Laila anymore. Or you,” Michael said. “It’s too painful for him right now.”

Michael called out Dee-Dee and Ed for even thinking that James would abduct Laila and flee the country, adding: “Honestly, I think it’s best he’s well rid of both of ya.”

The story then took yet another turn, as James returned. He said his flight had been delayed and he wanted to hand back Laila’s blanket, which he’d accidentally packed.

After an another argument, James’ flight got delayed again, and Dee-Dee took the chance to offer a proposal; he stays, and co-parents the baby with her.

She admitted she had no idea how it would work logistically, but it would be the best thing for Laila.

James agreed to give it a try… but will it work out?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX and YouTube.
